Team Mental Skills

There are many characteristics that typify an effective team, among which are: a clear definition of the mission and goals of the team, the role each person has in accomplishing those goals and the processes that guide and lead the team to be most effective. Just as important is the commitment that the team members have to the organization and to each other, which is the glue that holds the team together through storms.

The team concept is built upon a foundation of care, concern and commitment. Building interpersonal relationships is a critical dimension in building an effective team.

The main mental skills for teams are:

  • Team dynamic (set up norm, new member in the team..)

  • Social loafing in team (members don’t perform at 100% effort)

  • Team communication

  • Team cohesion (task cohesion & social cohesion)

  • Collective collapse prevention

  • Team motivation

  • Team building games /activities

  • Leadership (coach, captain) (formal, informal leadership)

  • Team role (role clearance, role acceptance, role satisfaction…)
